Katy Hamman-Stricker Library

Brazos Trail Region
404 East Mitchell Street Calvert, TX 77837 (979) 364-2881

One of the first chapter house in Texas; it is also one of the first built in the nation. The jewel of Calvert's Historical District is the Katy Hamman-Stricker Library built in "free of charge" in 1909 by the American Woman's League (AWL), an organization which provided women with the education, skills, and business opportunities that would allow them to be independent and self-sufficient. The Library is the only AWL chapter house remaining in Texas and one of the few left in the U.S. It remains much as it did in 1909 with only a few modifications.
